Dr. Marks, your history classes were my favorite courses at Whittier. Thank you for sparking my interest in Chinese history, and for keeping me busy writing papers. The critical thinking and writing assignments have helped me in professional life, and writing is a part of my job I immensely enjoy. Thank you.

Daniel R. Catone ’01, in honor of Dr. Laura McEnaney
Dr. Laura McEnaney engendered in me, a great love of American History. Her adept mind and unique passion for modern American History is a gift to Whittier and a gift which I feel grateful to have shared. While we did not always see historical issues in the same light, her challenges helped me hone my historical arguments. She did not tolerate a lazy amateur historian! I am grateful for the dedication she shows to education and to the study of history. Thank you Laura!
Jonathan Collard ’01, in honor of Dr. Richard B. Harvey
As a freshman I had the honor to join Dr.Harvey for his January Interim class – CA Politics and Government. This class and Dr. Harvey forever shaped the career path that I would choose to follow today. During my four years at Whittier – Dr. Harvey was more than an exceptional educator and scholar he was also a mentor and friend. The dynamic man who authored six editions of his award winning “Dynamics of California Government and Politics” before retiring in 2001 will forever be the “key to Whittier College.—Jonathan Collard, Class of 2001 (Director of Government Affairs, Asia for Covidien)

I would like to honor professor Michael McBride, Doreen O’Connor-Gomez, and Deborah Norden for their continued support and mentorship during and after my attendance at Whittier College. Thanks to their letters of recommendation and continued support I was able to participate in the Judicial Administration Fellowship of the Capital Fellows Program right after college and later attend the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and have been a practising attorney in California for the past four years.

While I had many fantastic professors during my time at Whittier, “Dr. I” was my advisor from my first day at Whittier all the way through my senior year. His course “AIDS and Other Human Diseases” helped me decide that I wanted to become a physician, and it’s interdisciplinary focus really embodies what a Whittier education is all about!

I’m donating in honor of Dr. David W. Crain. He has been a professor, mentor, and friend to me over the all of these years. I respect Dr. Crain and highly value our relationship. I was lucky enough to also have him as a professor in my MBA program at Pepperdine University (I graduated April 2012). Dr. Daniel Duran played an instrumental role in my life as a teacher, mentor and friend during my time at Whittier College. His classes opened my eyes to the global economy and empowered me as an entrepreneur. After my time with Dr. Duran at Whittier, I went on to work for an investment bank in Sydney, Australia before returning back to the States and launching a successful commercial real estate investment company. Before meeting Dr. Duran, I couldn’t have imagined this would become my path. Thank you, Dr. Duran.
Krista L. Key ’07, in honor of Dr. Joseph Price
I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Price. It is because of him and his classes that I fell into my Religious Studies minor and was welcomed into the honor society, Theta Alpha Kappa. Thank you Dr. Price for being such a wonderful professor and one of my favorites at Whittier College.
Celina Mancia ’07, in honor of Professor Deborah Norden
The impact Professor Norden has had on my life reaches far beyond Whittier’s classrooms. Her classes were always the toughest but I learned the most. She has encouraged me to challenge myself academically, professionally, and personally. I will always recall the trip she led us on in South America as one of my fondest memories and am lucky to have her as a mentor and friend to this day. Thank you!
Chelsea Manfredi ’07, in honor of Dr. Mike McBride
Dr. McBride was my mentor and primary source of inspiration, knowledge, encouragement and support through my years at Whittier College. If it weren’t for him, I may not have stayed to graduate from Whittier College, but I am forever grateful that I did and cherish the memories of my time at WC. You spent countless hours working with me on my Whittier Scholars major, sharing texts to read, and helping me process my Sustainable Urban Development project. You also made me quite the Geographic Information Systems enthusiast! Thank you for your persistent confidence in me and your big heart. I would not be where I am today without you.
I remember going into your office feeling distressed about where I was going with my Whittier Scholars project, and suddenly you would have a new article you’d found for me in the New Yorker or the LA Times, and things would all start coming together as we discussed the content. Thank you for your inspiration and for believing in me- I am where I am today in great part because of you.
Best Jan Term course ever? Calculus! You turned complicated material into something very manageable (and actually entertaining!). Thanks for inspiring me to take a course I didn’t think I would succeed in. It turned out to be one of my favorite accomplishments at Whittier.
The lense through which I learned to see the world in your classes and through conversations with you has greatly impacted how I am and what I do today. Thank you for your confidence in me and for demonstrating that we must question every ‘norm’ we’re presented with.

He constantly goes to great lengths to put his students first and help them realize their career goals and dreams. I can know for a fact that I would not be at the same place in my life as I am today without his unwavering support and encouragement and all the opportunities he has given me. Dr. McBride is truly one of a kind.

Kathryn Harrold ’14, in honor of Dr. Daniel Duran
Perhaps Whittier’s greatest advantage is the committed professors and the small size of the school that allows you to interact personally with every one of them. You have been a model example of the mentorship a Whittier professor has to give. Your expertise and passion for the world of business first inspired me to make it my area of study. Travelling abroad on Jan term to Argentina to study multinational corporations in your class only further cemented my dedication to the task. You are a challenging professor who demands the best that every student has to offer. It is because of that expectation I believe students, including myself, discover achievements within themselves they never believed possible. You are always available to your students to write a personal letter of recommendation or educate us about the changing world we must dive into. I give my sincere gratitude to you for not only making my Whittier experience the best is can be, but also for the endless inspiration and dedication you give to your students.
