Dr. Wendy Furman-Adams is an inspiration. Passionate and generous, a beautiful writer and gifted teacher, she offers her students what seems like the universe in a course. Then she follows with support in all of the practical aspects of the profession, from how to master the art of the essay to surviving graduate school and the first critical reviews of one’s work. More than twenty years after graduating from Whittier, I am honored to count her now as a colleague and dear friend. Thank you Wendy.

There are no words to describe the amazingly powerful and valuable impact Les Howard has made on my life. Beyond his contributions to my understanding of culture and society via his spectacular sociology classes, Les also provided amazing mentoring to me and many others on academic, professional and personal levels. He always brought a tremendous passion and integrity to everything he did. My last class with Les over 20 years ago, but to this day I am constantly using lessons I learned from him both in and out of the classroom. I know I am not alone in my feeling that Les Howard is a huge part of my belief that Whittier College is and was an outstanding institution. Thank you Les for helping me and so many others, we are all better people for having worked with you.

Jennifer L. Young ’93, in honor of Dr. Wendy Furman-Adams, Dr. Charles Adams, Dr. William Geiger, and Dr. Joseph Fairbanks
More than two decades have passed since I first took classes with Dr. Wendy Furman-Adams, Dr. Charles Adams, Dr. William Geiger, and Dr. Joseph Fairbanks, yet they and their fellow Poet faculty and staff members figure powerfully in my sense of self, in my memory of Whittier, and in my professional identity. As a teacher and scholar, I still look to Dr. Furman-Adams as a role-model; her passion continues to inspire me. Dr. Adams remained a generous mentor by treating me as a colleague at my second academic conference many years after graduation. Dr. Geiger balanced critical rigor with a sense of delight both in students and in texts. I think of him whenever I leave the room mid-class to fetch something I’ve forgotten in my office! Dr. Fairbanks challenged me—and I minored in history to rise to his challenge.

For inspiring an appreciation of the big ideas, fostering critical reasoning, and offering new ways of understanding the world we inhabit. Fascinating conversations with my 8-year-old about Plato, the problem of foreknowledge, and Chuang Tzu would not have occurred without you.

Cedric O’Brian Wallace ’94, in honor of Les Howard and the Whittier Scholars Program
The staff/faculty of the Whittier Scholars Program and other faculty such as Les Howard opened my eyes on to wide open opportunities and taught me how to reach within myself and to find myself. This allowed me to reach for and take advantage of those opportunities. A more focused open-mind was born.

Tara D. Barnhart ’95 in honor of Dr. Michael Praetorius and Dr. Clifton Morris
I was not a philosophy or even a humanities major, but Dr. Praetorius was one of the most influential teachers I have ever had. He exuded a love of learning, teaching, and the Truth. He inspired a search for understanding beyond the simple statistics I compiled in my other academic pursuits. I am a faculty member at CSU Fullerton now and have my marked-up copy of Plato’s Republic on my bookshelf in my office. Whenever I go to that shelf for reference and guidance, I see that used paperback and think of him. If there is an “ideal” form of a professor, Dr. Praetorius is it.
One always knew one was up for a treat and a challenge in Dr. Morris’ class. His standards were very high but he motivated students to achieve them. He had such an amazing command of the content and a knack for driving home big ideas with interesting stories or analogies. As a teacher I’m amazed at his ability to ascertain how well students really understood the concepts in a few carefully crafted questions. Additionally, his array of various colored lab coats is beyond compare! I consider myself privileged to have been his student.
